Alpine Electronics Implements StealthWatch™ to Assure Network Integrity Across Distributed Enterprise
Continuous Integrated Insight Enhances Security Posture and Operations of Network

ATLANTA, Ga., October 11, 2004

Lancope, Inc., the leading provider of behavior-based network integrity solutions, today announced that Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., the industry-leading manufacturer of high performance mobile electronics, has deployed StealthWatch to protect the core of its network, which supports nine geographically distributed locations in North America. StealthWatch helps Alpine Electronics assure network integrity by maximizing the availability and protection of critical online business operations through behavior-based threat defense and continuous real-time network insight.

“As a leading Tier 1 automotive sound system and navigation supplier with a critical reliance on network availability, Alpine Electronics constantly looks to new, innovative technologies that enable us to defend our mobile electronics network against the ever-evolving spectrum of threats to our network,” said Vasile Guilea, Information Systems manager for Alpine Electronics. “Lancope offers an innovative solution in StealthWatch that delivers unique awareness allowing us to discover and address network exposures before they become crises as well as significantly reduce the time from a network event to its successful resolution. As a result, the deployment of StealthWatch significantly benefits Alpine Electronics’ distributed network of domestic and international research affiliates.”

Alpine Electronics initially looked to StealthWatch as an effective intrusion detection system (IDS) to protect the network and confidential data given the company’s recent direct-to-consumer eCommerce initiative. After comparing several IDS technologies, Alpine Electronics found that StealthWatch considerably enhanced its network architecture, which includes host-based IDS, AV and SPAM solutions. Guilea believed that a single appliance that utilizes a behavior-based approach was far easier to manage than a signature-based solution delivered on a combination of software and hardware.

Upon installation, StealthWatch immediately identified several infected hosts on Alpine Electronics’ network. By monitoring network flows to detect anomalies such as zero-day attacks, misconfigured devices or unauthorized applications, StealthWatch enabled Alpine Electronics’ network engineering team to discover and mitigate threats from infected computers at its European affiliates which were attempting to communicate and infect its U.S.-based research affiliates.

Guilea clarified, “For example, if Alpine Electronics in North America was attacked by a virus in Japan, StealthWatch identifies the infected workstation and enables the network team to contain the incident through automatic or administrator-authorized traffic blocking. StealthWatch also alerts North American teams to communicate to administrators in other countries or regions to these emerging network threats.” In addition, he found that StealthWatch was particularly effective at providing “visibility into the network to reveal and remove suspicious activity such as scanning associated with worms and viruses.”

“Alpine Electronics’ experience mirrors those of our rapidly expanding customer base,” said Harland LaVigne, president and CEO of Lancope. “Initially impressed with StealthWatch’s ability to deter, detect and defeat network attacks, they quickly recognize the extensive benefits of our solution in providing insightful network intelligence for a number of applications, including worm containment, policy compliance and network management.”

According to Ellis Posner, founder of the TechprodX Group, Inc., which facilitated this customer win, “TechprodX sells a broad spectrum of world class security products. StealthWatch is one of the very few, however, that easily exceeds customer expectations. This product truly should be an integral component of a best-practices layered approach to security.”
